Arsenal: 5 Reasons They'll Win Nothing More Under Wenger

5. The Defence

mertesacker Back in the 90's, when Arsenal fans were singing '1-0 to the Arsena,l' a back four made up of Lee Dixon, Nigel Winterburn, Steve Bould and the outstanding, brave and committed Tony Adams were at times unbeatable. That must feel like a world away right now. 'Building from the back' has always been the way at Arsenal, and still is today, though you perhaps wouldn't think so judging by the way some of the defensive players have performed in the last two seasons. All that stands between the Arsenal goal and a very dubious defence are two Goalkeepers that can't always be depended upon. In front of them, Thomas Vermaelen, who had been fairly dependable for the Gunners but who now seems to have lost confidence playing alongside Per Mertesacker, who was supposed to turn around the Gunners' defensive fortunes. How wrong that turned out to be. Additionally, Bacary Sagna seems to have little interest in defending and often spends more time in the opposition half, leaving the defence to be over-run in his absence. You can also probably turn a London bus quicker than Laurent Koscielny, even despite his apparently high transfer fee. These are not the kind of players that Premier League defences should be founded on. Or at the very least, they are not showing the right sort of form for such players.
