Ambitious Arsenal are plotting a summer move for Manchester United’s unhappy striker Wayne Rooney.
Manager Arsene Wenger has admitted his interest in the England international, in what would be arguably one of the most sensational transfers of this summer’s window.
And the Frenchman can certainly afford the star, considering he has upwards of £70 million to burn.
The procurement of the one-time Old Trafford hero would be a great coup for long-suffering Arsenal and their fans, who have had to pay some of the highest ticket prices in the country to watch their side win nothing for almost a decade.
Yet they could, typically, be set for yet more disappointment this summer with the news that the deal could fall through due to United’s policy of refusing to sell top players to Premier League rivals.
Take defender Gabriel Heinze as an example. The then-unhappy former United star lost his attempt to force the club to allow him to move to rivals Liverpool and was instead sold to Real Madrid.
And the same will likely happen if Rooney is so adamant that he wants to quit, meaning the Gunners will have to look elsewhere for a new striker.
