Chelsea Transfers: 5 Signings Jose Mourinho Must Make

His challenge now is similar to what it was in 2004, to make Chelsea title contenders once more, after two seasons without a credible challenge. Mourinho will also be seeking to restore his reputation, which has been somewhat dented by his failure to lead Madrid to their tenth Champions League title. Although he won the Copa Del Rey and the La Liga Title, this fell well short of the expectations of the world's biggest club for a three year managerial tenure, and Madrid's demanding fans made their feelings known by booing Mourinho in his last game in charge. Mourinho's ability to motivate his players has also been called into question after he lost the dressing room at Real Madrid and engaged in a high profile spat with club captain Iker Casillas. It appears that once again Mourinho will be given considerable resources by Roman Abramovich in order to restore Chelsea to the top of the Premier League. The outgoing interim manager Rafa Benitez has claimed that: "they will spend 100m and they will sign three or four players." 5. Edinson Cavani
The Uruguayan frontman would be a costly addition to Chelsea's squad, with Napoli President Aurelio Di Laurentiis insisting that he will only be sold if his release clause of £55 million is met, but such an outlay may not be as unreasonable as it sounds for one of the most coveted forwards in Europe. Napoli appear to be resigned to Cavani leaving despite his huge price tag, for they have already signed a potential replacement in Bayern Munich's Mario Gomez. Cavani is a player very much in the mould of Didier Drogba, who Mourinho signed in 2004 and went on top become a Chelsea great. He is strong, a great finisher and a genuine aerial threat, attributes which have led to him scoring 104 goals in 3 seasons for Napoli, which shows a remarkable level of consistency. Chelsea are currently lacking in the striker department with only Demba Ba and Fernando Torres, neither of whom have quite delivered what was expected of them. Torres' struggles have been well documented, whilst Ba has only scored 6 times in 22 appearances since his move from Newcastle. The acquisition of Cavani would also allow Chelsea to loan out Romelu Lukaku again, which would provide him with a regular first team place instead of being an understudy for Ba and Torres.
