Around this time in the season, it seems to have become tradition for football fans to begin pondering another disappointing campaign at Anfield. This week is the perfect time for that, as Brendan Rodgers looks over the tapes of a 2-0 humbling at home to West Brom, who swiftly leapfrogged Liverpool into 8th place. It was a game where Liverpool didn’t exactly play badly, but a missed penalty from Steven Gerrard was as much a symbol of frustration on the night as the two late goals conceded.
For whatever reason, Liverpool seem destined for a mid-table finish, despite fan aspirations at the start of the season.
It’s a frustration heightened by the club’s recent spending, which could rival anybody in the top flight. That has been funded partly by outgoing deals, and in most cases those top players who have left, have gone on to bigger and better things: players like Xabi Alonso at Real Madrid, Javier Mascherano at Barcelona and even Fernando Torres has been picking up medals. The players who have come in as their replacements have, by and large, been a disappointment.
The departure of such players has been the story of Liverpool’s woe the past couple of seasons, but that isn’t the only reason Brendan Rodgers’ side are far from the top of the table currently. Here are the six reasons why, once again, Liverpool’s season is failing.
6. Over-Dependence On Suarez
Since joining Liverpool in January 2011, Luis Suarez has cemented his position as the club’s most important asset. Controversies aside, he is an incredibly talented striker who is arguably the most dangerous player in the Premiership with the ball at his feet. Liverpool have pinned pretty much all their hopes for this season on him, praying he would avoid injury and keep them chugging along.
Relying on a player that possesses such lofty talents as Luis Suarez isn’t exactly an awful idea, but you have to wonder where Liverpool would be in the table but for his fantastic goal return. ‘No support for Suarez’ was the soundbite of the first half of the season at Anfield, with Andy Carroll going out on loan to West Ham and nobody coming in to replace him. Things have looked up since January with the arrival of Daniel Sturridge, but no matter what happens between now and May, surely Rodgers will be looking back at the 4 months of the season when Suarez seemed to be the club’s only goal threat.
With their sketchy record in the transfer market in recent times, the speculation surrounding the future of Suarez and goalkeeper Pepe Reina is a real worry for Liverpool. They simply could not afford to allow these players to leave and be replaced by flops, especially Suarez. The key to Liverpool’s ‘transition’ is the Uruguayan front man; his departure would be a real blow for a club that relies on him so heavily.

The only thing wrong with Liverpool at the moment is its fans. The British fans especially. first, for the love of Benitez. Man who everybody remember for one Istanbul night completely failing to remember how badly the manager prepared the team for the match. 3-0 in half-time, yes very good managing. I don’t believe that Benitez had nothing to do with that win. Second, British Liverpool fans think that just because we are Liverpool, we should win every game. And if we don’t, sack the manager and get some ancient hero once again back.
So, the problem is that Liverpool fans are living in the past, not in the present.
the problem is not br its the owners they got a decent mananger but we need a world class manager br was a cheap option van gael was the man for us
Rodgers signings are pathetic lightweight players ( Allen Borini Assiadi coutinho ) = 38 million pound ? And we didn’t need any of them,NOT ONE ??? We needed a midfield general & a proper striker FACT !!! Rodgers substitutions are pathetic,as are his team selections…Sorry but he isn’t a premier league manager & his backroom staff are league 1 quality at best ;-( Who is this chief SCOUT fallows, the man needs SACKING ASAP !!!
from our last game against westbrom we played well but lack wasn’t on our side or lets say we lack team spirit
Aging talisman? I agree, but we haven’t got the money to replace his quality. How much would Gerrard cost to replace? More than we have. We have to gamble on young players.
No Champions League? The season isn’t over yet, but it’s not easy to get back in when you have been out of it for awhile. Would we suddenly be in it with a new Manager? That was the thought with Dalglish, and that didn’t work. The club are hopefully now thinking long term.
Most of these poor recent signings were not bought by Rodgers. He quickly moved Carroll out because he didn’t feel he could fit into his system. The good think is he did it early. Chel$ki have not been so quick to move Torres on.
Of course it is transition, if the club could plan a seamless transition, they would obviously do it. There is a lot to be done, and without Chel$ki and City money, it will take time.
Stop sh*t stirring. At least give him till the end of the season.
If Liverpool continue as they are they will be a midtable club for a long time to come. Quite honestly they can claim to still be a big club based on history only for so long. Based on History Preston North End are the fourth most succesful club in England…..are they a big club?
Gavin Miles are you kidding?! Preston have won FOUR major honours in their entire history – how exactly are they the fourth biggest English club history wise? As a Liverpool fan, I think the problem is the poor replacement of key players over the last 5 seasons and the fans. If you’re ever on twitter after a game that LFC have lost everyone says BR should be sacked. If we win and you’re on it everyone thinks he is God. Fans need to realise that it’s so difficult to get into the CL after so long out. It took Spurs 5 years of good signings to get there! City took 3/4 even with their money. I’ll always stick by BR, I think he’ll come good. Good article by the way.
Brendan Rodgers could talk for hours and not actually say anything. He’s a fat joke who only owns the one jacket ffs!!! If Liverpool want the success they crave, get them to ring up Peter Coates (Stoke Chairman) and ask for me. Big Gerry is dying for one more crack of the whip. I mean like, I managed to take Oldham from League 1 into the Champions League within five years in Football Manager 2007, so why not Liverpool?
I think we can all agree that Gerry Francis would relish another crack at the whip
