5. Shay Given

The rock between the sticks on Tyneside for many a year, and regarded as one of the best keepers in the Premier League during his time in the North-East, Given was sorely missed after his £7 million transfer in 2009. In an already disastrous season that would ultimately result in relegation to the Championship, the loss of Newcastle's number 1 goal keeper, and especially one of the calibre of the former Celtic youth, was a devastating blow. Playing in a Newcastle side notorious for defensive problems throughout the years, Given often put in an impressive performance to keep his team in the game, and following his departure, things went from bad to worse for the Toon Army, as they finished 18th following defeat at Villa Park on the final day of the season, and prepared for life in the Championship.
