This has not been a stellar season for Newcastle United, not by any means.

Having sensationally finished fifth last season, many had expected them to go on to bigger and better things. Tonight, they take on Benfica in the quarter finals of the Europa League, a prize for their fantastic performances last season, but the current campaign has been a thoroughly disappointing one.

Back in January, following a defeat to Reading, the Magpies found themselves just two points off the relegation zone and while they thought they may have earned themselves a reprieve following a good run of results and the purchase of several new players in early February, Alan Pardew’s team are well and truly back in a relegation scrap and are facing a second exile from the Premier League in four years.

If the Magpies do stay up, Pardew is going to have to address some of the problems that have crippled his side this season, namely the lack of depth his team has, something of which was ruthlessly exposed by the spate of injuries Newcastle have suffered this season.

Following the arrivals of the likes of Debuchy, Gouffran and Yanga-Mbiwa, there is more than enough to suggest Newcastle can one day crack the top 6 again, but Pardew is going to have to build on the foundations he laid down in January in order to achieve that.

Here are 5 signings he could make to break the top 6 again.
