Andre Villas-Boas

The end of May saw one of this summer’s biggest rush of transfer activity with four sought-after stars moving clubs and, unfortunately for English teams, none of them will be plying their trade in the Premier League next season.

Radamel Falcao, James Rodriguez, Joao Moutinho and Neymar all left their respective clubs for Monaco and Barcelona, respectively, and while the likes of Chelsea and Manchester City will be ruing their inabilities to land the first and the latter of the quartet, Tottenham will be kicking themselves for missing out on Moutinho yet again.

The midfielder was a transfer target for Spurs for ages, who were reportedly within minutes of signing the star on last summer’s transfer deadline day, but the transfer window slammed shut and wrecked their dreams of bringing the Portuguese national to England.

Spurs badly need a new central midfielder. The likes of Luka Modric and Rafael van der Vaart have long since departed North London for pastures new while Scott Parker faces an uncertain future at White Hart Lane.

Now that manager Andre Villas-Boas has missed out on one-time target Moutinho, he is going to need to turn his attentions elsewhere and here, we profile 5 alternative midfielders he could sign now that the Portuguese star is unavailable.
