A truly great show is fascinating even when its subject matter isn't something that would normally interest you. For many Netflix viewers, GLOW achieves what was previously considered impossible: getting millennial women emotionally invested in wrestling.
Because while GLOW explores the making of the campy 80s all-female wrestling show creatively named Gorgeous Ladies of Wrestling, it does so much more than that.
It details with impressive relatability the complexities and subtleties of female relationships. It creates a world where female bodies of all shapes and sizes are celebrated and women are empowered through the simple act of learning how to pretend to beat the crap out of each other.
Alison Brie stars as a stripped down version of her eager to please, over-achieving persona, but what really sells the show is the veritable army of would-be female wrestlers, some established actors and others unknown, who share the screen with her. GLOW stands on the strength of their relationships, and owes its success to their hard work and dedication.
