TV is the perfect form of escapism. You can go home at the end of the day, stick on whatever drama you're binge-watching (or just rewatch Friends, because they're always there for you), relax into it and unwind. It's fun, it's easy-to-consume, and then it's done. But great TV, of which there is a lot right now, goes much deeper than that. It isn't something to just aimlessly watch before bed, but something to truly invest in: your time, your brain, and your emotions. It helps you escape to another place, but once you're there you're taking in the world, analysing every aspect, feeling the shocks as if they're real, laughing at the jokes, and really caring about it; it makes you feel something. It's why audiences are outraged when a beloved character dies (which won't be featured here, as it has already been covered in this list which you have definitely already read, right?), and moments that hit big emotional beats - for better or worse - live much longer in the memory and really connect with the viewers. Thankfully, there has been no shortage of such things in 2015. Amidst all of the superb comedy and drama witnessed this year, there were some moments that truly struck an emotional chord, either warming viewers hearts or breaking them completely, leading to tears of joy or uncontrollable sobs of sadness.
NCTJ-qualified journalist. Most definitely not a racing driver. Drink too much tea; eat too much peanut butter; watch too much TV. Sadly only the latter paying off so far.
A mix of wise-old man in a young man's body with a child-like wonder about him and a great otherworldly sensibility.
