10 Most Emotional TV Moments 2015

10. Wilson Fisk's Backstory (Daredevil)

Wilson Fisk did some horrible things. He was brutal, killing those who got in his way, or at least seriously injuring them. An imposing figure with a personality to match, if you got on his wrong side there tended to be just the one winner, and he didn't let anyone stand in his way. The Big Bad of Dardevil's first season, he was very much a villain. And yet, we sympathised with him, even cared about him. Part of that credit goes to Vincent D'Onofrio's commanding performance, but it also goes to the fantastic writing. In particular, episode 8 - Shadows in the Glass - fleshed out his character much more than we're accustomed to with a villain, positioning him as a real character with understandable motivations, and a tragic backstory that made you feel sorry for him despite the horrendous things he had done. The way he was bullied by his father makes for one of the most compelling episodes of the show, as he's forced into repeatedly kicking someone who was picking on him, and then pays off in bloody fashion as he kills his father with a hammer. It may not justify his actions, but it also means he isn't just another typical bad guy, instead becoming one of the most compelling villains on TV in recent years.
