7. Nate Fisher - Six Feet Under (Season 5, Episode 9)
Nate Fisher, the protagonist of Alan Ball's critically acclaimed funeral home drama Six Feet Under, constantly had brushes with death at the end of each season. Hell, he even had a fake out death in the Season 3 premiere when he underwent surgery for his AVM. Towards the series end, it was always clear that Nate would eventually die. This was a show that was all about death and the way we deal with the aftermath. But leave it to the writers who had Nate's death come at the most random time. After cheating on Brenda with Maggie in the previous episode, he had a brain hemorrhage. The entire Fisher clan and friends were told that he would be in a temporary coma, but he surprisingly woke up the next morning. Everything seemed like it was going to be fine. Everyone got to say what they didn't know would be their final goodbyes, except his mother Ruth. In the last few minutes of the episode, Nate and his brother David had overlapping dreams, a mesmerizing sequence that symbolized the shift from life to death. We heard a faint sound of flatline and then David woke up to Nate's lifeless body. The main character of the show was dead, even with three episodes left of the series. "Nathaniel Samuel Fisher Jr., 1965-2005."
