15 Unanswered Lost Questions That Totally Have Explanations

2. What Did Locke See?

There's a great scene in the first Locke-centric episode where he's cornered by the monster and it seems like he's done for. Locke stares the monster down, but the viewer can't see what Locke glimpses. He later tells Jack that he "looked into the eye of this island, and what I saw was beautiful." What did Locke see, and why did the monster let him live?

The Explanation: It's highly implied that the monster showed Locke the "source," i.e the glowing heart of the island we see in Season 6. From the beginning, the Man in Black was trying to manipulate Locke, and part of that plan involved getting him swept up in the magic of the island. What better way to do that than to show him the incredible, magical source?

Plus, Locke tells Mr. Eko in Season 3 that when he confronted the monster, he saw a "beautiful bright light." That sounds pretty familiar, doesn't it? So the monster either took Locke to the source itself or simply showed him an image of the source, but, either way, this helps provide a lot of insight into why the character is so obsessed with the island's magic from then on.
