House of Cards' latest season may not have ranked among its very best, with a greater emphasis on cartoonish, melodramatic plot lines and a general feeling that the show's starting to run out of steam, but it was still tough to argue with the typically stellar performances from Robin Wright and Kevin Spacey.

The prevailing sentiment about this season, however, was that even its sillier moments couldn't hope to compete with the insanity of real world U.S. politics, and so what felt shocking and fresh several years ago now feels depressingly ordinary.

Spacey being booted from the show amid sexual harassment allegations puts it in a tough spot for its shortened upcoming sixth - and final - season, but at least season five essentially hinted at Wright taking the lead from him anyway.
