Jason Bateman decisively shakes off any and all belief he can't deliver the dramatic goods in this compulsively entertaining, gorgeously shot crime drama.

Sure, it's destined to suffer under comparisons to Breaking Bad, and has to wade through some occasional dramatic cliches, but the performances of Bateman and Laura Linney effortlessly carry it through, not to mention some subversive twists on the expected formula.

Bateman also directed four of the season's ten episodes, and acquitted himself admirably. Ozark isn't quite cream of the crop TV yet, but with a second season on the way, it has every chance to graduate to must-see programming.
