The Premise: Four cops, all with strikingly different talents, lead the Metropolitan Police in the 80's, unbeknownst that they all return to the force in their twilight years. New Tricks is still going, for those who didn't realise. What started off as quite a fun crime show clearly aimed at an older audience evolved into one of British TV's highest ratings winners. The BBC never had the guile to axe it; most of the original cast have been written out, and yet 2014 will bring the eleventh series of the show. It's a shame the show is so clearly holding on to being a "favourite with parents" because the original premise was alright: there's the strong woman, her mentor, the rough-and-ready geezer and the meticulous outsider. It's a decent set-up with established character traits; wouldn't it be a whole lot more exciting though if it was set during the prime of these cops' lives? The blatant BBC marketing towards an older audience is probably what stops a lot of younger viewers watching New Tricks, but it doesn't make it a bad idea as a show. If the same idea was reimagined with younger, brighter, more exciting faces imagine the possibilities that New Tricks would have...
