Time has not been particularly kind to FlashForward, but there's no denying at the time it caused something of a stir amongst television fans. Airing on ABC in 2009, FlashForward centres on the lives of several people following a mysterious event which caused everyone on earth to momentarily blackout. During this blackout many people saw visions of what appeared to be their future.

There were several reasons why FlashForward caused a sensation when it first aired. For a start, its wide release followed not long after the finale of Lost, which was at the time the big mystery series on television. Back then the high concept narrative was a relatively new thing, that being a story that is built upon one central question or enigma. These days it's hard to move for gimmicky television (think Under The Dome or Colony) but in 2009 many people flocked to the show hoping it would offer a replacement for Lost or a question with more satisfying answers.

At the time, FlashForward acted as a lightening rod for a fresh mystery narrative, captivating viewers with its unique premise. Despite cancellation, there's enough of value in FlashForward's first season to merit watching it regardless.
