5. Cybershades
The Cybermen are one of the Doctors greatest ever foes. Second only to the mighty pepper pots themselves. Over the years the Cybermen have had numerous redesigns and some of them look more frightening than others. Their rebirth in the new series got mostly positive reviews from fans for their design, but some still longed for the Doctor to meet some of the classic variations. The Christmas special The Next Doctor gave them a step in that direction with a slightly more classic design (well the face anyway), but a massive injection of the ridiculous ensured that those hoping for the retro would be waiting a while longer. The result of Cyberman technology being combined with animal DNA, the Cybershades look like men dressed in gorilla costumes with Cybermen face masks on. It sounds stupid, but luckily their only appearance was intended to be more comical and less scary. A clever move by the producers as they are able to have a familiar, yet new monster without having to spend much on a new design. Its just a shame the BBC didnt see the opportunity to market cuddly Cybershades that you could snuggle up to in bed each night.
