9. The God Complex-I Really Am Just A Mad Man In A Box.
Episodes like The God Complex are great for two different reasons. Firstly, they show a true insight into the characters, here with the primary one accepting who he is for the greater good, and secondly, they are so off the wall crazy it should never be shown to anyone without a full knowledge of the Whoniverse. In this episode, Eleven, Amy, and her husband and fellow companion Rory are trapped in a 1980s style mysterious hotel in which those with strong faiths are brought as food for tortured creatures forced to feed on others faith in things. This entire episode is a wonderful look at both how much belief can both save you and condemn you, and the relationship between Amy and the Doctor, which ends in the creature coming after Amy because of her faith in the Doctor. He pulls her aside, and tells her that in the end, he is not a hero; he really is just a madman in a box. Matt Smiths acting in this scene is some of the best work in modern British television, as he is saying this to save Amy, and to make her lose her faith in him, but when he explains that he was vain, and he brought her along and stole her childhood only to lead her to her death-he knew that was true, and it broke him as a person. Its heartbreaking.
