Sherlock Showdown: Benedict Cumberbatch Vs. Robert Downey Jr.

5. The Best Deductions

This is obviously a huge part of any Sherlock Holmes retelling: the deduction. It has been said that Sherlock from BBC actually does not deduce, as he does not draw from facts to make a logical reason, he induces using inductive reasoning, because he sees the facts as they are. Either way it doesn€™t really matter, but it is something to think about. This specific category is drawn mostly from the fact that those are two very different ways of receiving information. In the Sherlock Holmes movies, it€™s common to watch the movie not knowing what€™s going on, and then at the end have Robert Downey Jr. explain it to you in an okay British accent. This is exactly where the differences come in. In the movies, Sherlock Holmes takes the audience, and whomever he€™s talking to back through everything that€™s happened, and makes sense of it using things that we most likely missed. In the second series of BBC Sherlock we see this as well, but it isn€™t highlighted as much as it is in the movies. The show focuses more on what Sherlock induces by what he sees when he talks to someone. However, in The Sign of Three, we see that he does in fact deduce what is going on to try to figure out who is attempting to murder someone at John and Mary€™s wedding, using his mind palace to remember what he€™d learned through past experiences. Both actors do this incredibly well, Benedict gives off a better Well, why do I have to explain it? voice, and Robert Downey Jr. has the curse of€sounding like Robert Downey Jr, and never any one else. No matter who he plays, he€™s always Robert Downey Jr. Either in the Iron Man suit or in Victorian-England clothes, etc. Therefore, in terms of the way Sherlock was written, I believe I will give this category to Benedict, despite the fact that there are times where he induces instead of deduces. Also Benedict has the added advantage of doing this multiple times an episode, with writer Steven Moffat€™s inability to stick to one plot line, where Robert Downey Jr.€™s in charge of wrapping up the movie with the deducing of why we€™re all so confused. Best Deduction goes to: BBC Sherlock/Benedict Cumberbatch

I'm currently attending my local college while trying to figure out who I am. I love Doctor Who, Sherlock, really any BBC show. I've also been told I'm a bit of a nerd. Specifically, a theatre nerd.
