Star Trek: 10 Things It Should Learn From Doctor Who

10. Make It An Event

Doctor Who does spectacular event television and at times, Star Trek did the same before it lost its shine. Cliff-hanger moments between the two episodes of Best Of Both Worlds in The Next Generation and between the two-part Storm Front in Enterprise confirm as much. The opportunity for Star Trek to create an event is there for the 50th anniversary €“ rather than requiring something spectacular to happen in a series, the creation of a series itself would be the required event. Throw in a crossover and that event becomes exponentially bigger again. A Star Trek crossover would mimic the event impact of a multi-Doctor episode or a multi-alien episode - like the Dalek vs Cyberman fight at Canary Wharf, and would provide the fan service necessary to really grip fans old and new. The only time that Star Trek has dealt with a story much like this was in the TNG episode Redemption where fighting nearly broke out between the Klingons and the Romulans. Of course the use of models at the time meant that a huge number of vessels couldn't be seen on screen, and we had to wait until the later seasons of Deep Space Nine before any actual battles of this type appeared on screen. In short, we need a Star Trek event in 2015, and the smart money would be on a crossover.
