10 Biggest Main Events In WWE SmackDown History

9. World Heavyweight Title Battle Royal (13 January 2006)

Many fans feared the worst after hearing word of Batista's injury at the start of 2006. 'The Animal' was going to be stripped of his World Heavyweight Championship and worse still, he would miss WrestleMania 22, with few of his SmackDown undercast ready to fill his shoes.

In a stroke of genius, WWE decided to bring Kurt Angle across from Raw, a surprise entrant in the 20-man battle royal to determine the 'Animal's successor. Sure, it made no sense from a kayfabe perspective, but few really cared: Angle was back where he belonged.

As far as match quality goes, this was pretty much exactly what you expect of a frantic multi-man affair in which the primary aim was to make Mark Henry - a few months before a run at Undertaker's streak - look like a super-human. It wasn't terrific, in other words.

But the ending - with Angle, loitering on the outside of the ring, surprising Henry just as he was about to celebrate victory - was superb, and a fitting way to welcome the Olympic gold medalist back to the show on which he did much of his best work.
