10 Longest Reigning ECW World Heavyweight Champions
3. Taz
Another ECW Original, Taz was one of the most protected stars in the history of Extreme Championship Wrestling. It is rather surprising then that it took him six years to pick up his first ECW World Heavyweight Championship, and even more surprising that it could be considered his only reign. His second one lasted all of nine days and existed merely to get the belt off of Mike Awesome. Taz was an integral part of ECW however, and just before his championship win he was carrying around his own title that was known as the FTW Title. This wasn't a sanctioned ECW title, but it featured heavily on the show. If you're unsure what FTW stands for, the 'TW' stands for 'the World' and the F, well the F is a word frequently used by potty mouths. Taz would unify the FTW and ECW Heavyweight Championships by defeating Sabu on March 29th 1999, but by then he had already been ECW Champion for two months. In many ways the FTW belt was a de facto world title for the company, as Taz was a major star and the then-champion (Shane Douglas) was out injured. Taz dropped the title just before moving over to WWE in a three way match against Mike Awesome and Masato Tanaka.
Born in the middle of Wales in the middle of the 1980's, John can't quite remember when he started watching wrestling but he has a terrible feeling that Dino Bravo was involved. Now living in Prague, John spends most of his time trying to work out how Tomohiro Ishii still stands upright. His favourite wrestler of all time is Dean Malenko, but really it is Repo Man. He is the author of 'An Illustrated History of Slavic Misery', the best book about the Slavic people that you haven't yet read. You can get that and others from www.poshlostbooks.com.
