17 Things We Learned From John Cena On Chris Jericho's WWE Network Podcast

11. Early Wrestling Attire

Cena tells a humorous story about an early match he had in OVW where, after stinking the joint out he asked William Regal for any advice or feedback. He credits Regal with trying to be nice when telling him "Well lad, if you had a pair of boots at least you's like a wrestler." The comment flew over Cena's head and he thought that the lack of proper ring gear was the only thing holding him back, so he promptly went out and bought 75 sets of boots and 150 pairs of tights, all in different colors and patterns. He said he wanted to follow Ric Flair's example of constantly changing outfits and never wanted to wear the same thing on OVW TV more than once. This story is notable for several reasons. Wrestling attire is quite expensive, and it's not unreasonable to assume most of the guys in OVW with Cena were practically starving to death, meanwhile here's this well-off kid from the suburbs of Boston shelling out thousands in cash trying to emulate Ric Flair. Couple that with the fact that a guy who bought 75 pairs of boots and 150 different tights has spent the last decade wrestling in sneakers and jorts and it makes for quite the ironic tale.
