Last year's SummerSlam was an example of just how anaemic WWE's summer blockbuster can be without the right matches. For every featured stunner like that chaotic, balls-to-the-wall Fatal-4-Way main event, there was meandering nonsense like Bray Wyatt vs. Finn Bálor, John Cena vs. Baron Corbin and Jinder Mahal vs. Shinsuke Nakamura.

Expect the under card to blow 2018's headliners away this time around.

Why? Well, WWE expect fans to engage with a tale positioning a want-away Universal Champion who would rather be in UFC against an unwanted babyface rammed down everyone's throats. Brock Lesnar showing indifference towards his employers and Roman Reigns whining about everything like a spoiled brat does not a compelling main event make.

Of course, pre-show expectations could be blown out of water by an excellent, dramatic match on the night. Nobody should claim that Lesnar and Reigns are bad workers, because they're not. No, they're the victims of woeful repetition, confusing storytelling and a chasing pack on the under card who have something to prove.

Just like Roman against Brock to date, SummerSlam 2018's potential show-topper can't win...
