8 Greatest Double Turns In Wrestling

3. Ted Dibiase Vs. Dick Murdoch

In the most memorable episode of Mid-South Wrestling, Ric Flair was set to defend the NWA World Heavyweight Championship against Butch Reed. Flair and Dick Slater injured Reed the week before, so a new contender had to be decided. Reed was originally given the title shot because he was the North American Champion, having just defeated Dick Murdoch for the belt. Captain Redneck, as Murdoch was affectionately known, believed that he was next in line then, but promoter Bill Watts decided Ted DiBiase deserved the opportunity.

Although DiBiase was despised by the fans, it had been a year since his last title shot, so he was due. Murdoch disagreed and told him to step aside because he broke DiBiase into the business and was more deserving. DiBiase stood up for himself, saying he was North American Champion more times than anyone, including Murdoch. That triggered a fist from Murdoch, who proceeded to slam DiBiase into the ring post, busting him open in the process.

Despite the vicious beating, DiBiase refused to sit out the match. With his head bandaged and the crowd chanting "Teddy", DiBiase transformed from villain to hero within less than an hour. Murdoch signified his attitude change as well, dropping DiBiase’s head with a brainbuster on the concrete floor after the match.
