In 2013, Dolph Ziggler was seen as the future of WWE. He had the look the ladies love, the athleticism of Shawn Michaels, and the passion fans across the world could connect with. When he cashed in on Alberto Del Rio the night after WrestleMania XXIX, the WWE Universe exploded in adulation as a talented performer had finally risen to the top.

Unfortunately, his momentum was halted due to a concussion. He wouldn’t be able to compete until five weeks later at Payback in a return match with Del Rio.

Heading into the match, Del Rio was a face and Ziggler was the heel. However, with every kick to Ziggler’s head, the crowd felt more and more sympathy for the champion. By simply targeting his opponent’s weakness, Del Rio was earning heat in rapid fashion. Ziggler refused medical attention, vowing to fight on. A shark smelling blood, Del Rio welcomed the effort before finally defeating him for the title. Thanks to Ziggler’s perfect selling and Del Rio’s natural intensity, both characters switched roles and rejuvenated each other’s careers.
