From early-1978 to late-1983, Bob Backlund was the WWF Champion. He was a clean-cut wrestling machine, and the last of Vince McMahon Sr.’s top guys. When he lost the title to The Iron Sheik, Backlund disappeared from the company, missing out the entirety of Hulkamania. He returned to the company in late-1992 as more-or-less the same character, and fans didn’t really take to him. In 1994, Backlund underwent a massive character shift, and became a raving, unstable megalomaniac. While the new Backlund was incredibly entertaining, most fans didn’t expect him to once-again reach main event status.

However, at Survivor Series 1994, he shocked the world when, thanks to Owen Hart, he defeated Bret in a throw-in-a-towel submission match. Backlund had won back the title in the same manner he lost it over a decade prior. However, Backlund was a transitional champion, as he dropped the title three days later to Diesel at a house show in Madison Square Garden.

While many would have probably gotten a kick out of a lengthy Backlund reign with the personality he had, at least he could say he got to be world champion one more time.
