Few performers have done more for the prestige of a belt than Undertaker did with the Hardcore Championship in 2002. Capturing the belt in this hard fought match at Vengeance 2001, Undertaker went on a two month reign of destruction that instantly legitimised the Hardcore division.

The Vengeance match is a perfect example of 'Taker’s growing ability to work well with smaller performers. Though he won, 'Taker did so by making Van Dam look like a fierce competitor that pushed him to his limit. The ending sequence saw Van Dam nearly deliver a Van Daminator that would send The Undertaker off the stage only to be caught in a Chokeslam and suffer the same fate.

After pinning the champion, Undertaker sold the reaction to the contest beautifully, staring Van Dam down with a look of a confusion, disbelief and fear, all acting as a thin veneer for the respect bubbling under the surface. This simple piece of storytelling ensured both men came out of the contest looking fantastic.

The two went on to have other unforgettable encounters including a vicious fight on RAW - but this match is required viewing to see how effortlessly Undertaker slipped into the Big Evil persona.
