With The Rock and Stone Cold Steve Austin keeping the WWE Championship picture in an untouchable realm of anticipation and quality, WWE were left with the other contenders circling the prize aimlessly. The solution was as simple as it was effective.

A quick storyline was implemented in which The Undertaker pointed out how, despite their storied careers, Triple H had never beaten the Deadman.

At WrestleMania X-7 the two knocked out a referee, brawled in the crowd and provided a truly breath-taking go-home sequence. The Undertaker’s style was in a period of flux at the time, with more aerial moves being stripped away to reveal a solid, no nonsense foundation where any flourishes were sparingly utilised to elicit the biggest reaction. The match is a testament to both men’s complimentary characters, as they provided fans with a chaotic contest full of well-timed spots and rest periods.

With The Streak still in its infancy, the match was not as predictable as their latter encounters, and is a worthy addition to a now legendary WrestleMania.
