Star Wars Rumour: Game Of Thrones Creators' Trilogy Is Set During Old Republic
An even longer time ago, in a galaxy far, far away.
Game of Thrones' creators David Benioff & D.B. Weiss are making the jump to Star Wars, and a new rumour states that their trilogy of movies will be set during the Old Republic, with filming possibly starting as early as this fall.
With Star Wars Episode IX ending the Sequel Trilogy and the Skywalker Saga when it releases this December, the future of Star Wars on the big screen lies away from the setting we've seen dominate the past 40 years, with an onus on different timelines and characters instead. Rian Johnson's trilogy will be something brand new, but it appears we're getting Weiss & Benioff's first, and that it'll be set a few hundred years before the Skywalkers. The rumour comes courtesy of Star Wars News Net, who've heard the Old Republic news from a trusted source who is "95%" sure it's accurate. They go on to say:
"The timeline is hundreds of years prior to the Skywalkers, so think almost Star Wars meets Lord of the Rings.”
The Old Republic is one of the most popular eras among Star Wars fans, and when Benioff & Weiss were announced to be making Star Wars movies it was hoped they'd do something around this (admittedly expansive) timeframe, which spans thousands of years. Given their work on Game of Thrones, the Old Republic era - filled with mythology, politics, and wars - seems like a perfect fit for them. A blend of Star Wars and Lord of the Rings would deliver the kind of scale in terms of battle that we've not really seen before in the franchise.
Being set "hundreds of years" before the Skywalker Saga means it's not going to be an adaptation of Knights of the Old Republic, but there's still plenty of stories to choose from (or create something new within that setting). The report also mentions that they're aiming to begin filming this fall, which is ambitious given their Game of Thrones commitments, but just about doable, especially with Disney money behind them. That should mean we'll get a much firmer idea of what's going on with the project at Star Wars Celebration next month.
