Some of the biggest names in gaming are making their long overdue return, established franchises are heading off in bold new directions and the next game from the creator of the Ultimate Game of All Time makes its way to our shores in March. (No pressure, Miyazaki-san!)

Much like last year true next-gen exclusives are hard to come by, but given the ensuing shortage of next-gen consoles (and the utter bastardry of scalpers on the internet) it's a good thing less well-off gamers can still play the latest and greatest on current hardware.

And what is the latest and greatest, we hear you ask? (WhatCulture contributors have unusually sensitive hearing). Let's find out!

20. Triangle Strategy

For gamers of a certain age, the words "Square" and "SRPG" will evoke the warmest of smiles.

In 1997 Square Enix (then known as Squaresoft) helped define the Strategy RPG genre with the sublime Final Fantasy Tactics. Tactics' combination of staggeringly deep combat and politically-charged storyline made it one of the company's most revered games, and in 2022 Square Enix will be aiming to make us fall in love all over again with the quixotically-named Triangle Strategy.

And judging by the demo released in March of last year, they're on the right track to do just that.

Triangle Strategy looks set to be a compelling mixture of the old and new. The mind-bogglingly deep combat and plotting of Tactics has been updated with sumptuous HD artwork and modern twists, like letting your party vote on the course of action to take. (You will, of course, be able to unleash your inner Machiavelli and attempt to persuade your companions to vote for the course of action you favour).

Triangle Strategy is set to test players' wits this March, and likely for many months beyond that.
