10 Amazing Comics You've Never Heard Of
6. Serenity Rose
Created by Invader Zim artist Aaron Alexovich, Serenity Rose started life as a webcomic following its titular character, one of a handful of incredibly powerful witches, as she just tries to get on with her life without everyone staring at her. The problem, of course, is that when you have the power to freeze lakes and create an army of ectoplasm creatures with a wave of your hand, the world is going to pay you rather a lot of attention.
The thing about Sera is just how normal she is for someone who can bend the laws of physics to her will. Because the majority of Sera's problems are so mundane, the character- for all the wimpy emo-energy she gives off- remains highly relatable.
Although the second volume, Goodbye, Crestfallen, does feature one particularly impressive battle scene, this is really the only fight in the whole comic, and gets much of its strength from this fact.
One of the joys of the comic is watching Alexovich's art as it evolves over each subsequent volume, from the simple, if muddy, panels of Working Through the Negativity through to the fabulous full page spreads that open 2010's Break My Stupid Heart.
