10 Amazing Comics You've Never Heard Of

7. The Manhattan Projects

What if the Manhattan Project, the famous set of experiments that led to the creation of the first atomic bomb, was just a cover for something even weirder? That's the premise for this intriguing series by Jonathan Hickman and Nick Pitarra.

Featuring conspiracy theories, alternate history, aliens, and inter-dimensional travel, the series follows the scientists behind the project, including Oppenheimer, Feynman, and a very questionable Albert Einstein, as they change the world forever.

The series covers the real history behind some of the most shocking and tumultuous events of the last century, including the Cold War and the Space Race. Oscillating between the sublime and the ridiculous, you'll be left wondering if the writer was taking advice from the homeless bloke down the road with the tinfoil hat.

The original series came to something of a sudden and unceremonious end earlier this year, with most of the many plots left hanging. Fortunately, it picked up almost immediately with a sequel called Manhattan Projects: Beyond The Stars. As literally nothing has changed beyond the title, you have to assume that they're trying to rope in new readers by presenting it as something a bit new.

A word to the wise, however, and start at the very beginning. By the time Beyond the Stars kicks off, there is so much going on that any outsiders will be hopelessly lost.

With a (nearly) useless degree in English literature and a personal trainer qualification he's never used, Freddie spends his times writing things that he hopes will somehow pay the rent. He's also a former professional singer, and plays the saxophone and ukulele. He's not really used to talking about himself in the third person, and would like to stop now, thanks.
