2. Jason Todd
Perhaps the Joker's most famous atrocity is the murder of Jason Todd, the second Robin. It's certainly the one which has impacted on Batman the most and the repercussions of it are still felt in the DC Universe today.
During the Death in the Family storyline, the Clown Prince lures Robin to a warehouse using his long-lost birth mother Sheila as bate. Once the Boy Wonder is in his clutches, he savagely beats him with a crowbar before detonating a bomb to finish the job, also taking out his mother in the process.
Batman arrives on the scene too late and is mentally scarred and forever changed by the death of his prodigy, as explored in the Lonely Place of Dying story which followed.
Like most comic book heroes, Jason Todd was eventually resurrected (via the convoluted consequences of the Superboy-Prime punch) but like his mentor, he was never the same again after being acquainted with the Joker's crowbar.
