3. The Last Season Was Axed
The two-part finale, Legacy, has Superman brainwashed into believing he is a soldier of Apokolips and the son of Darkseid. After Superman declares war on Earth, humanity loses faith in the the Last Son of Krypton.
Naturally, Superman breaks free of his mind-control and defeats the forces of Apokolips. In the final scene, Superman acknowledges humanity no longer trusts him but Lois Lane reassures him, saying he will win them back "one person at a time."
Now, this was a fantastic ending but fans were surprised it didn't have a more uplifting conclusion. Superman is the most inspiring superhero. Why didn't it have an ending to reflect that?
Well, there was meant to be another season revolving around Superman earning humanity's trust back. Sadly, the studio was worried people were losing interest in Superman. Because Batman Beyond was popular, Warner Bros. decided to have the writers of Superman: TAS work on that show instead while preparing for the launch of a Justice League cartoon. This seemed to work out since the "humanity not trusting superheroes" concept was repurposed for Justice League, which went on to become one of the greatest DC series ever.
