10 Most Hated Retcon Changes In Marvel Comics

4. Captain America’s A Nazi

Anyone who’s been keeping up to date with Marvel over the past 18 months or so will likely tell you Captain American’s reimagining as a HYDRA sleeper agent is the most offensive thing to happen in comics since they showed how MODOK goes to the toilet—what you missed that issue?

So grave was writer Nick Spencer’s decision to re-envision Cap as—let’s face it, a Nazi—was to no-one’s shock badly received by a massive portion of the readership, so much so that he received threats against his well-being, which we’ll say right now is completely over the line.

But it was a ballsy move, to say the least. Taking star-spangled Steve Rogers and almost literally painting over the red, white and blue with a Swastika took guts, and the biggest and best storylines can often be the riskiest.

This always seemed a stretch too far, though, perhaps not least of which because it was somewhat disrespectful to legendary Marvel duo Jack Kirby and Joe Simon, the original creators of the character.

As it goes, Rogers’ twist apparently wasn’t a decision made by himself and was instead the Red Skull’s doing via the sentient Cosmic Cube, Kobik. You know the old saying, if you want something done right, do it with a Cosmic Cube.

Tom Sunderland hasn't written a bio just yet, but if they had... it would appear here.
