4. Death In The Family

In September of 1986, DC Comics ran an audience ballot to decide the fate of then Robin Jason Todd. Just over 10,000 votes were cast resulting in 5,217 for Robin to live, whereas 5,343 voted for him to die. A difference of only 72 votes.
The controversial ending was then published, with Joker bringing Robin’s demise to fruition with a crowbar. If like us, you still can’t walk past a crowbar without wincing thanks to this story. Although it is not all doom and gloom, in response to fan outcry Jason Todd would go on to be resurrected in the 2005 story Under the Hood, where he returned as anti-hero Red Hood.
A Death in the Family, like Knightfall, is serial Batman comics at its best. Boasting of a brief appearance from Superman and timely artwork from Jim Aparo, this four part story earns a well deserved place on this list.
