10 Most Tragic Deaths In The History Of Spider-Man
6. Jean DeWolff
One of the best things about the Spider-Man comics, for us, is the strong supporting cast. Batman can boast his impressive Rogues Gallery of villains, and the Fantastic Four are their own family, and Superman has his stalwart friends in the form of the Daily Planet staff, but they're nothing compared to the rich and constantly evolving characters that surround our friendly neighbourhood web slinger. Over the years that cast has changed and evolved, characters genuinely developing - like Flash Thompson's move from bully to one of Pete's best pals to the most recent host for Venom - and getting fully fleshed out. As much as we love Spidey himself, there are members of his entourage we formed similarly strong attachments to. Reiterating what we said about Captain George Stacy: that means they have to die. Man, did George RR Martin ever write a Spider-Man comic? Because honestly, we don't think he could come up with anything worse than some of the fates that befell our favourite Spidey characters. The worst one of all, we think, was saved for one Captain Jean DeWolff. Becoming the webhead's sole cheerleader in the NYPD after Stacy's death, she was a damn fine police officer and a nice foil for our hero, too, providing support and help with the crime fighting side of things, along with becoming an actual, true pal to both Peter and to us readers. Then they went and spoilt it all by doing something stupid like having her ex, Sin-Eater, shooting her in the face. And having Spidey be the one who finds her. Along with a bunch of newspaper clippings implying that she had the hots for Peter. Guh! Our emotions!
