6 Reasons Why Jonathan Hickman’s Infinity Was Absolute Drivel

1. Confusion, Triviality And Nothing, Ad Infinitum

Thanos2 Besides the boring story coupled with Hickman's poor writing and inability to make the reader care about anything or anyone, there were a number of questions thrown up by the plot that were never answered. When Black Bolt made the decision to blow up Attilan and set off the Terrigen bomb, couldn't he have moved the city away from Manhattan, one of the most densely populated areas in the world? Attilan is a floating city - move it out over the Atlantic, that way avoiding the destruction (once again) of New York City. But no, he keeps hovering over NYC and craters the place, the bloody idiot! Initially the Builders are your generic bad guys - they want to blow up every world and kill everyone. Then halfway through the Event, when they're winning no less, they decide they want the worlds they're targeting to surrender instead. Why the change of heart? What happened to death and destruction to wipe their mistakes off the face of existence? No clue, it's totally arbitrary. And why negotiate peace terms when you're winning? Why would they even meet Thor when, being in the superior position, they could simply dictate terms? This break also gives the good guys the opportunity to fight back and win - which they predictably do. For all-powerful creators, the Builders are morons. Also, why do the Builders hate humans so much? Several times over the course of the story they repeatedly call humans the worst things in the universe and that humans deserve nothing but to be wiped out. They are the bad guys and so those are typical bad guy things to say, but still, some idea behind their motivation would've been good. During the peace negotiations, it's stated beforehand that the Avengers and their allies are in a weaker position and can't face the Builders by themselves because they're outnumbered and outgunned. Then Thor kills a Builder and cheers everyone up. But it doesn't mean their situation has changed - they're still outnumbered and outgunned. Nevertheless, this one action inexplicably turns the tide of the war and the Avengers and their allies defeat the Builders. It makes no sense. In the end, Infinity's story was scattershot and didn't have an arc. Obviously we're supposed to root for the Avengers, and we do if only because the Builders are so cartoonishly evil, but once everything was all said and done, nobody really changed or developed. Thane appeared, along with a load of new Inhumans, but the characters themselves ended as they started. Then again, maybe that's what the title means - these stories never really end, they just repeat ad infinitum: Infinity. Oh, and a new Marvel Event is of course on its way to you shortly with even more tie ins and variant covers! But seriously, this new one will REALLY change everything like never before, promise! The Marvel Universe will never be the same again (again)! Until the next time... * So that was the latest Marvel Event - another disappointing mess. What did you think, did you like Infinity? What're your thoughts on Marvel, or any superhero, Events? And let me know if you have any answers to my questions - I didn't read the tie-ins, just the main six issues so I probably missed some details. Let me know in the comments below!
