As entertaining as fights can be, conflict can only be truly compelling when it goes beyond a physical contest. As an audience, we need to know what everyone is fighting for. In Captain America: Civil War, we know why every member of each team is fighting because they actually get to express their opinion on the heart of the matter.

Every hero on Team Iron Man and Team Cap gets at least one chance to assert their position on the conflict. Most of them get more than one opportunity and they all make rational, well-reasoned arguments. Before these characters ever engage in fisticuffs, we hear them verbally battle it out in a number of debates.

These discussions are critical because they show that no one here has a desire to fight. What they have are very strong opinions on The Avengers' role in the world that eventually leads to an inevitable, physical escalation. The nature of the Sokovia Accords ensures that they can only avoid a fist fight for so long.
