The Vision is one of the most complicated characters in Marvel Comics history. Initially created by Ultron as a weapon against the Avengers, The Vision soon turned against his robotic creator to side with the heroes, and, save for one or two minor slips off the wagon over the years, he has more or less stayed a hero ever since.
Many fans of The Vision complain that, often, Marvel aren't entirely sure what to do with him, with his characterisation - mostly related to how human he behaves - changing depending on who is writing him.
Because of this complexity, many doubted whether Vision would ever make it into the Marvel Cinematic Universe. However, the character, albeit with a slightly altered backstory including Tony Stark's A.I, J.A.R.V.I.S, as part of his creation, made his big screen debut in Avengers: Age Of Ultron. The MCU has so far leaned towards the more human version of the character, with much of his storyline centred around his relationship with Wanda Maximoff, the Scarlet Witch.
Now Vision is set to take centre stage alongside the Scarlet Witch in the Disney+ series WandaVision. Before the show hits screens, here are just some of the comics you should read to build your understanding of this complicated character.
5. Avengers A.I
In 2013, Vision became a member of Avengers A.I, a team brought together by Hank Pym to defeat an evil artificial intelligence known as Dimitrios.
The team consists of Pym, Vision, Vision's cyborg brother, Victor Mancha, a repurposed Doom-Bot, the mysterious Alexis, and S.H.I.EL.D Agent Monica Chang. Dimitrios is located within The Diamond, a database filled with sentient A.I, and the team must defeat him before the Government orders The Diamond, and all the innocents within it, destroyed.
At one point, Vision becomes trapped within The Diamond, bonding with the other A.I, and is torn about which world he truly belongs in. The story becomes a perfect explanation for Vision's fluctuating levels of humanity over the years. The comic also has some interesting discussions on the legal status of Artificial Intelligence in the Marvel Universe; are A.I their own beings, or are they the property of the human who created them?
Finally, the last battle features a moment that all true Avengers fans should see. When the A.I team finds themselves in trouble in The Diamond, they call the regular Avengers for help. As everyone is converted to data upon entering The Diamond, everyone is able to merge with Vision and deliver the ultimate 'Avengers Assemble!' beatdown to Dimitrios.
