10 2017 Movies That Definitely Deserve Sequels
9. Call Me By Your Name
Luca Guadagnino's awards-tipped gay romance Call Me By Your Name ends in heart-breaking fashion, with an agonising close-up of Elio (Timothée Chalamet) crying by the fire having been told that the intern with which he had a summer romance, Oliver (Armie Hammer), is now engaged to be married. It's an intense finale that raises a number of questions about what happened next.
Elio's discovery of his own sexuality was tied inextricably to his fascination with Oliver. This creates the question as to whether Elio continued to explore that sexuality without the intensity of that relationship behind him.
The film also explains that Elio's father invites a different intern over for the summer every year. Given what transpired between Elio and Oliver, a sequel to Call Me By Your Name could delve into the way his relationship with Oliver affects how Elio acts around subsequent interns.
Either way, it would be a delight to be able to take a second trip into Guadagnino's sun-baked world of permanent vacation.
