10 2017 Movies That Definitely Deserve Sequels
8. Valerian And The City Of A Thousand Planets
With a production budget somewhere in the region of $200m and a worldwide gross of only $225m, it's fair to describe Luc Besson's highly ambitious sci-fi Valerian and the City of a Thousand Planets as a costly box office flop. The movie is the most expensive film made independently and also the most expensive film ever made in Europe. Besson bet big on his vision, but was torpedoed by mainstream ambivalence towards it.
Valerian created an enormous world in the shape of Alpha, which is a city we only scratch the surface of during the film. Besson gives his audience glimpses of the different societies and various species that live on the space station, but very few of them are spotlighted by the story.
If the film had been a financial success, then a sequel would likely already have the green light. Indeed, Besson himself has said that enough positive fan reaction could bring about a follow-up. It would be an enormous shame for the rest of this world to be left unexplored.
