10 "Ambiguous" Movie Endings (That Totally Aren't)

4. Butch & Sundance Die - Butch Cassidy & The Sundance Kid

Take Shelter Michael Shannon
20th Century Fox

Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid touts one of the most famous endings of all time, as Butch (Paul Newman) and Sundance (Robert Redford) find themselves surrounded by the Bolivian Army and charge out of their cover, all guns blazing, as the image suddenly freeze-frames. The End.

Many have questioned the true meaning of the ending - namely, did Butch and Sundance die during the final shootout or not?

But invoking a little Occam's razor here, the pair are surrounded by an army they're impossibly outmatched by, and the closing freeze-frame is accompanied by the relentless sound of gunfire.

There's only one possibility left when you look at the facts - they were gunned down, and the freeze-frame turning sepia-toned afterwards represents them becoming "history" both literally and figuratively.

As much as we'd all love to believe that they skirted out by the skin of their teeth and actually made it to Australia, both the film and the actual account accepted by most historians point to the outlaws never making it out of that town alive.
