10 "Important" Movies Nobody Actually Likes

Like the previous entry, there is a small but vocal minority who love this film. While definitely epic in scale and scope, 2001: A Space Odyssey has perhaps the most apt title of any film on this list- it truly feels like you have been on an odyssey of your own by sitting through it. There are definitely a number of ideas bubbling about in Kubrick's supposed masterpiece, but they don't interconnect in any meaningful way, nor resonate with the majority of the audience.

There really isn't a plot to speak of, with some weird, unexplained alien monolith popping out throughout existence for, well, reasons. An entire story arc involving a team searching and finding the monolith ends with a screeching noise, and then nothing. It isn't even addressed later on in the film, making one ponder why we had just wasted the last half hour investing with these characters.

Lovers of the film will point out that the cinematography was years ahead of its time and that the scenes featuring robot HAL 9000 'turning bad' are great moments, among other philosophical musings. While it's hard to disagree with the first two points, the inconsistencies in what the film is trying to say- the purpose of the alien monolith a big one- makes Kubrick's refusal to give us any answers all the more infuriating.
