10 "Important" Movies Nobody Actually Likes
1. Citizen Kane
There really couldn't be any other film on the top of this list than the film loved by critics and reviled by fans. Hell, even Orson Welles wasn't that pumped up about it, much preferring his 1949 film The Third Man. The tale of a media magnate who utters the phrase "Rosebud" before he dies is a largely disinteresting tale, with the mystery of how anyone knew what his final words were when his room was empty a far more interesting premise.
As any student of a film studies class forced to endure this slow burning nothing of a flick can tell you, there is an awful lot of symbolism crammed down your throat here. Look at the amazing mise en scene! Listen to how the soundscape encaptures the greater themes. Look at how the lighting is used to display Kane's hidden desires.
The problem with the film is it has no soul. There's no characters to cheer for or care about, there's no interesting story arcs and the overdose of motif after motif gets very cumbersome after awhile. And to finalise the smashing over our heads is the most cheesy 'twist ending', when it is revealed that Kane's final words were in reference to his childhood sleigh. Real subtle Orson, real subtle.
