10 '70s Sci-Fi Movies You Need To Watch Before You Die

8. Fantastic Planet (1973)

Silent Running
Argos Films

You’ll never find an animated feature much stranger than Fantastic Planet. It may not be for everyone but it is definitely an experience to view for its unique visuals, confusing scenario and sheer oddness.

Fantastic Planet is abundant with bizarre imagery which is difficult to comprehend, but it makes the film even greater for all its creativity and distinctiveness. It has plenty of beautiful moving art with some powerful orchestration to accompany the action.

It tells us the story of the Draag species, a group of gargantuan blue humanoids, who live on the planet Ygam. They bring Oms (the name for humans as a play on the French word for “man”, Homme) to their planet, where they maintain a technologically and spiritually advanced society. On this planet, Oms are considered animals – their fate is either to live as a domesticated pet or out in the wilderness. Weird, right?

It is one of the most quirky animated movies of all time and one that shouldn’t be skipped on.
