10 '70s Sci-Fi Movies You Need To Watch Before You Die

7. The Andromeda Strain (1971)

Silent Running
Universal Pictures

The Andromeda Strain gives us a fairly straightforward storyline which is able to provide some very gripping and unnerving drama. This is one which doesn’t hold back on the action and dark plot twists.

In a small town called Piedmont, New Mexico, almost all the residents are discovered dead after the return to Earth of a space satellite. The satellite in question has brought back an unhealthy organism, which has killed all but two inhabitants of Piedmont – a baby and an old man.

It is all down to a team of four scientists to pull together and find out what causes such a strange phenomenon before civilisation gets any worse.

It’s a slow but steady journey within The Andromeda Strain, one which is able to create some palpable suspense amidst the fight against the deadly viral outbreak. The setting and aesthetic look ahead of their time and have aged tremendously. This is another science fiction flick of the 1970s which has been unfairly eclipsed.
