6. From Beyond

The 1980s was the decade of cheesy horror movies, with the emerging straight-to-video market offering a new platform for low budget filmmakers to produce cheap films with a viable audience to target. While many of these films have been rightly consigned to the dustbin of movie history, there are some notable exceptions well worth rediscovering.

From Beyond is one such horror film. There have been many attempts to bring the twisted horror worlds of H. P. Lovecraft to the silver screen, and while many of them have failed to capture his delightfully twisted vision, From Beyond hits the spot. It's a typically simple story of a mad scientist's efforts to contact creatures from another dimension (by stimulating the pineal gland, leading to some wonderful special effects) but often with good horror simplicity is the key.

No doubt much of its success is due to those involved in the production: produced by Brian "Society" Yuzna and directed by Stuart Gordon (who directed another Lovecraft adaption the year before with Re-Animator) they demonstrate a clear understanding of the material and perfectly balance the gross-out horror with moments of genuinely funny comedy.

It's also one of the goriest movies currently available on Netflix, with a host of great special effects sequences which increase in their absurdity right up to the over the top finale perfect for fans of schlocky horror thrills.
