So many great movies have been made about New York, and many of Hollywood's greatest romantic comedies have been set in the Big Apple, from Chaplin's City Lights to Woody Allen's Manhattan. It's a city which seems to invoke the passions, and filmmakers are quite happy to exploit this sense of romanticism.

Norman Jewison's Moonstruck is one such film deserving of a place in the pantheon of classic New York rom-coms. It stars Cher as a recently widowed Italian-American woman who falls in love with her deceased husband's hot-headed baker brother (Nicolas Cage on fine form).

The script is sharp and witty - screenwriter John Patrick Shannley possesses an uncanny ability to capture the essence of family dynamics as well as the back and forth emotions experienced between new lovers, exploring each other's idiosyncratic qualities as their feelings blossom.

Moonstruck was a huge success when it first came out in 1987, although it's one of those old blockbusters which is often forgotten when film fans discuss the best comedies of the decade. With Nicolas Cage recently back on form with Mandy it's well worth revisiting his earlier performances, while Cher stands out in a role which earned her an Academy Award for Best Actress at the Oscars.
